Empowering the Next Generation of Farmers: A Call to Action for Agricultural VET

Vocational education and training (VET) are critical to equipping individuals with the skills necessary for thriving in dynamic labor markets. This includes the agricultural sector, essential for sustainable development. Recognizing the challenges of recruitment and the need for upskilling trainers, this project has undertaken comprehensive activities to analyze and address the current and future needs of agricultural vocational education in the European Union (EU).

The project’s activities have been structured to deliver three key insights which form the foundation for the policy recommendations outlined in this document:

  1. Analysis of Current Competences and Labor Market Indicators. We conducted a thorough examination of the competencies currently being taught in vocational programs. By collecting data on youth unemployment rates, activation percentages, and education intake levels across partner countries, we gained a picture of demographic and labor market for the partner countries.
  2. Identifying Future Competences for Farmers: Anticipating the evolving demands on farmers, we developed a matrix of future competencies required in agriculture. This includes both technical and environmental skills, and soft skills such as creativity and collaboration.
  3. Development of an Educational and Didactic Manual: A hands-on approach to teaching emerged as essential for aligning vocational education with future agricultural demands. By sharing existing teaching methods examples, the partner organizations shared inspiration. These methods were documented in a comprehensive manual to guide educators in fostering both professional and personal growth among students.

Building on the insights from the previous activities, we developed policy recommendations to support recruitment into Agro VET and enhance trainer upskilling.

These recommendations also focus on greening the curriculum to ensure education aligns with sustainability goals. The recommendations aim to make agricultural education more attractive, foster greater accessibility, and strengthen pathways to higher education.
